Carded Athletes

Basketball New Zealand works closely with the New Zealand Academy of Sport (NZAS) to deliver the carded athlete programme. A carded athlete has access to a range of sport science and sport medicine services according to their individual needs.

The Head Coaches of the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns are responsible for nominating a maximum of 16 athletes of each gender who are most likely to influence success at the recognised pinnacle events in their respective programmes in 2008. In addition, up to 2 athletes of each gender will be identified as having the potential to contribute to the success of the Tall Blacks or Tall Ferns beyond 2008.

If you have any questions about the carded athlete programme (for example, about your carding status or what your entitlement is), please contact the Basketball New Zealand office.

Drug Free Sport

Basketball New Zealand has formally adopted theĀ Sports Anti-Doping Rules (2007) which came into effect on 1 July 2007. The rules set out the responsibilities of Drug Free Sport NZ, Basketball New Zealand and the Sports Tribunal in order to combat doping in sport.

The Rules apply to all Basketball New Zealand members and those participating in Basketball New Zealand events or activities.

Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarships

The Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarship (PMAS) programme is a government initiative managed by SPARC and administered by the New Zealand Academy of Sport (NZAS). The purpose of the programme is to enable emerging and talented New Zealanders to concurrently pursue tertiary study and elite level sport development.

Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible for a scholarship:

  1. Be capable of impacting SPARC’s high performance mission, “More New Zealanders winning on the world stage”.
  2. Submit a complete application within the allocated timeline.
  3. Be endorsed by Basketball New Zealand leading up to and during the scholarship.
  4. Have met all athlete requirements whilst studying under scholarship in the previous 12 months, unless the NZAS agrees otherwise (athletes re-applying for a scholarship only).

With the funds available, it is unlikely that all applicants will receive a scholarship in 2009. Therefore, applications will be assessed and prioritised by an assessment panel. The selection criteria are outlined in the Programme Guide and applicants are likely to be prioritised in the following order:

  1. World class athlete and/or athletes receiving PEGs
  2. Level 1 carded athletes
  3. Level 2 carded athletes
  4. Level 3 carded athletes
  5. Level 4 carded athletes and other athletes who have the potential to impact SPARC’s high performance mission.

If you are planning on studying for any tertiary or vocational qualification that appears on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications at any stage during 2009, you may apply for a scholarship by completing the online application form found in the High Performance Sport section on the SPARC website.

Basketball New Zealand’s deadline for submitted applications is Friday 14 November, 2008. Once the deadline is reached, Basketball New Zealand will prioritise and send the endorsed applications to the NZAS. Successful applicants will be notified by the NZAS no later than 24 December, 2008.

For further assistance or information regarding these scholarships, please contact your ACE advisor or the Basketball New Zealand office.
