Giants Hold-Off Rams
Tagged in: NBL
The CPS Nelson Giants did their best to hand over another home game on Saturday night.
They failed on that count, but ultimately succeeded, clinging to an 84-83 win over the Marley Canterbury Rams at the Trafalgar Centre, moving into sole possession of third in the standings to complete round eight of the Dominion Finance NBL.
In what has become a recurring theme in the Giants season, Nelson again saw a big fourth quarter lead evaporate, before recovering in the final two minutes to record their sixth win from nine games.
Nelson were up 17 points, 73-56, with 9:26 remaining after point guard Michael Fitchett’s sixth three of the game, but were out-scored 27-7 over the next seven minutes to trail 83-80 with 2:12 on the clock.
Shooting guard Gerard Bowden, who finished with 17 points, scored the last nine points in the Rams improbable comeback, before Giants American forward Jamil Terrell made two baskets to get Nelson the win, his offensive rebound and put-back with 53 seconds to play holding up as the game-winner.
In the battle of Tall Blacks point guard hopefuls, Nelson’s Fitchett and Canterbury’s Jeremy Kench, Fitchett came away with a points decision, scoring 24 points, including 6-of-10 three-pointers, and three assists to Kench’s 12 points, four assists and four steals.
Chris Daniel added 17 points, five rebounds and two steals for Nelson, while Tall Black Phill Jones had 15 points and seven rebounds and Terrell and American centre Michael Harrison posted double-doubles. Terrell had 13 points, 13 rebounds and three assists and Harrison 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.
Earlier, the Giants dominated the second and third quarters, using a 17-7 run in the second to take a six-point lead into halftime, then a 16-6 spurt to end the third, taking a 14-point lead into the final period.
Veteran Dave Langrell topped the Rams with 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Bowden had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. New American centre John Whorton was held to six points and two rebounds in his NBL return.
The two teams combined to make 23 three-point shots from 58 attempts.
