With their playoff aspirations on life-support, the Property Brokers Manawatu Jets caused the shock of round nine in the Dominion Finance NBL.

A round-high 31 points from American point guard Kantrail Horton and some stifling defence powered the Jets to an 80-75 upset road win over the CPS Nelson Giants at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night.

Horton finished with 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting, eight rebounds and three assists, while fellow import Keith Davis and former Giant James Paringatai recorded double-doubles and the Jets held off a Giants fourth quarter rally.

Davis had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Paringatai had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

In the unfamiliar position of trailing by double-digits in the fourth quarter, Nelson rallied on an 11-2 run to close within three points with 3:56 to play but could not get any closer as Horton made crucial baskets down the stretch.

Tall Black Phill Jones top-scored for the G-Men with 22 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Michael Harrison added 19 points, Michael Fitchett and Jamil Terrell 12 points. Manawatu out-rebounded Nelson 48-36.

Tall Black Paora Winitana dropped eight treys as the Easy LPG Bay Hawks made 14 threes and defeated the Youthtown Auckland Stars 91-78 at ASB Stadium, Auckland.

Winitana made 8-of-15 from the perimeter, missed his two two-point field goal attempts and converted 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in a game-high 28 points as the Hawks moved into the top-six for the first time this season.

American forward Kevin Smith had a quiet second half but still managed 16 points for the Hawks, while Paul Henare posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists, to go with six rebounds, back-court mate Aidan Daly had 10 points.

Adrian Majstrovich and Valance McCarthy led the Stars with 16 points, Majstrovich pulling down 10 boards for a double-double. New import George Baker had 14 points.

Hawke’s Bay, who shot 46.7 percent on three-point shots to the Stars 25 percent, gave up the first 12 points of the second half to trail by double-digits but were able to retake the lead before the end of the third, then held off Auckland’s challenge early in the fourth and piled on the points late.

The Appliance Shed Harbour Heat absorbed the first half pressure from the Cartridge World Otago Nuggets, before easing to a 90-76 win at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin to move them into third outright.

Harbour guard Hayden Allen scored a game-high 27 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals against his former team, while Oscar Forman had 21 points, despite going point-less in the final quarter, and Mika Vukona 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Nuggets led 20-19 after the first quarter but the Heat quickly took advantage in the second period, leading by as many as 16 points as they broke the game open with a 15-4 run. Otago closed within three points with 5:09 remaining but the revival was short-lived as Harbour scored the next 12 points and never let the home side closer than eight the rest of the game.

Nuggets American import duo Lemar Gayle and Antoine Tisby combined for 47 points, Gayle with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Tisby with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Brent Charleton was the only other double-digit scorer with 11 points.
