Four teams worked overtime, literally, on Friday night in the Dominion Finance NBL.
A Troy McLean three as time expired sent the game into overtime, where the Century City Wellington Saints won 105-100 over the Appliance Shed Harbour Heat, while the Youthtown Auckland Stars defeated Devon Dynamos Taranaki 93-90 in overtime.
Down three points with time winding down in regulation, a mad scramble for the ball, resulted in Saints ball with 0.4 seconds remaining, McLean getting off the game-tying three as Harbour argued whether time had expired.
In overtime, Harbour jumped out to a six-point lead before the hero McLean scored seven points in a 9-0 Wellington run, taking a 100-97 lead.
Heat centre Tim Behrendorff, who scored all of his 17 points in the final six minutes of regulation and overtime, leveled the scores at 100s with a three-point play before new Saints import Ernest Scott and McLean, who finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, sealed the game from the free-throw line.
The Saints had owned a double-digit lead with under six minutes to play but after big man Kevin Owens fouled out with 4:14 remaining, the Heat were able to turn up the defensive pressure and go on a 16-2 run, leading 88-84 inside the final minute.
Behrendorff, who awoke from his slumber in the fourth after going scoreless for three-and-a-half quarters, could have sealed the win on the charity stripe but missed the back-end of two free-throws with 24.7 seconds to play, which left the door open for McLean’s catch-turn-and-shoot miracle shot.
Scott, who was only cleared to play late on Friday afternoon to replace compatriot Marquis Webb, scored a game-high 27 points and collected 11 rebounds and four steals in his debut, shooting 8-of-17 from the field and 6-of-10 on threes.
Harbour, who looked out of the game with six minutes to go, were led by 26 points from guard Hayden Allen, with Oscar Forman adding 21 points and eight rebounds, Jarrod Kenny 15 points and Mika Vukona 13 points and nine rebounds.
Owens, who played only 5:31 in the first half while picking up three fouls, had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Arthur Trousdell had nine points and 10 rebounds, Luke Martin 13 points and 10 assists and first half hot-hand Leon Henry with 17 points and eight boards.
In New Plymouth, Casey Frank had 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Stars overcame a five-point three-quarter deficit to steal a vital road win.
Tyrone Davey and Larry Bratcher each had 16 points for Auckland, who improved to 5-2 and joined undefeated League leaders Waikato Pistons and the Saints on 10 points.
Taranaki went away from their hot scoring threat, forward Link Abrams, late in the fourth quarter, allowing the Stars to send the game into an extra period. The home side turned the ball over on four straight possessions in overtime, the Stars pulling away.
Abrams posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Tony Rampton contributed 21 points, reaching the 1000 point plateau in the NBL, and point guard Ben Jeffrey 15 points and seven assists for the 4-4 Dynamos.
