Flavell Bill
As most are aware the Gambling (Gambling Harm Reduction) Amendment Bill (Flavell Bill) has been referred to the Commerce Select Committee for consideration. The bill proposes to change a number of things about the way gaming operations are run; which have serious implications for those who run gaming operations and community groups who rely heavily on gaming grants (detailed here).
Our position on the matter is subjective to our sport and community, as we do support some aspects of proposed changes in the bill regarding initiatives to prevent or reduce harm by gambling. However there are some proposed changes that could significantly impact our sport nationwide within our communities that will limit the continued provision of opportunities for participation in amateur sporting activities in communities.
As a National Sporting Organisation (NSO) we have submitted a unified petition in conjunction with other NSOs represented by the National Sports Organisations Leadership Group. If you have benefited from a gaming grant in the past, or hope to do so in future, please consider making a committee submission on this issue by the 21 June (online). You may also like to encourage others to support our existing pub funding model.
More information on the bill and how to make a submission can be found here.
