Purcell has represented New Zealand through the age groups, but this is her first tour with the Tall Ferns.

She attended Hutchinson Community College (where younger sister Hayley currently plays) before transferring to Southeast Missouri State University, helping them to the 2006 NCAA Tournament and registering a ìdouble doubleî (17 points/13 points) in their first round loss to Stanford University.

Purcell joins older sister Charmian in the national team and was one of the first players to sign for the Christchurch Sirens in the Australian WNBL.
