Waikato Titans men and Rotorua women won the 2012 Open National Championships held at Rotorua over the Labour Weekend.

After trailing for the first three quarters, the Waikato Titans came up with new resolve at the start of the fourth quarter to score 10 unanswered points and wrest the momentum away from a valiant Tauranga City men’s team.

Led by MVP Puke Lenden and a reinvigorated Daniel Green, the Waikato Titans held off the determined Tauranga side to win 80–77. Outstanding performances were posted for Tauranga by captain Eru Wills, Ashton McQueen and Jade Williams.

By contrast, the Rotorua women blitzed the North Harbour Dolphins in the first quarter, taking an unassailable 30-6 lead and never allowing their opponents closer than 20 points. Led by captain Emā Pene, MVP Gabby Adams and small forward Nadine Stone, Rotorua piled on the points and showed a lot of commitment to keep North Harbour’s Olivia Berry, Camilla Brunn, Ella Fotu and Georgia Perrott in check.

In the playoff for third and fourth, Te Tai Tokerau recovered well from their bruising semifinal encounter with Dolphins to defeat Waitakere West.
