A Secondary Schools National Championships

One got a national title. The other did not. But both went home with MVP awards.

Taumarunui High’s Waeana Ngarongo and Rotorua Lakes High’s Lisa Adams earned Most Valuable Player honours from the A Secondary Schools National Championships in New Plymouth on Saturday.

Ngarongo, and older brother Daniel Ngarongo, were tournament team selections for back-to-back 1-A national champions Taumarunui, who defeated Paeroa College 89-63 on Saturday night at TSB Stadium.

Paeroa had inside powerhouse Michael Aitken and Frano Huett named to the 10-man tourney team, while semifinalists Hato Paora College had Te Pasu Thomas and Karetai Williams-Paul selected and Tongariro School Ben King.

The girls tournament team was dominated by zone two schools, with only Buller High’s Elle Ngatai coming from outside the mid-North.

Although Adams’ Rotorua Lakes High lost the girls final, 55-42 to Church College, she took home the MVP award, also joining team-mate Terere Pa Walden in the tournament team. Church College had Courtland White and Rea Wolfgram named to the tourney team.
