Harbour guard Hayden Allen was promoted to the Singapore Slingers’ starting line-up and helped them upset defending champions Brisbane Bullets 119-102 at home in the Australian Hummer NBL.
Allen scored 10 points (4/9 FG, 2/5 3pt), adding two assists, two steals and a rebound, but committing eight turnovers in 28 minutes.
Singapore, which had a 2-14 record heading into the encounter, jumped on the depleted Bullets with a 34-21 opening period.
With Tall Black centre Craig Bradshaw still sideline with an ankle injury, international team-mate Dillon Boucher again started the game for the Bullets, contributing two points (1/3 FG), six rebounds, three steals and an assist in 20 minutes.
Tall Black centre Tony Rampton produced another strong performance for the West Sydney Razorbacks, but could not prevent them falling 118-125 to Adelaide 36ers.
Logging 29 minutes as a starter, Rampton had 15 points (4/6 FG, 7/12 FT), seven rebounds and an assist.
The Pigs were always on the back foot after trailing 26-43 through the opening quarter and have now fallen to 7-8 for the season.
In US college action, NZ-born Aron Baynes had 10 points in 13 minutes to help Washington State University extend their winning start to the season with a 67-64 result over Baylor University.
Baynes, who played for Australia at the World Student Games, but remains eligible for the Tall Blacks, shot 4/5 FG, 2/2 FT, adding two rebounds and a block before fouling out.
The Cougars trailed by three points with little less than four minutes remaining, but took the lead through a pair of treys from Daven Hammerling and held on for their seventh win, their best start since 1991.
Emerging Tall Black Christopher Reay compiled a “double double” as Midwestern State University overcame Cameron University 91-68.
Reay had 12 points (5/10 FG, 2/3 FT), 13 rebounds (six OR), an assist, a block and a steal in 19 minutes as the Mustangs reached halftime 27 points ahead. They are now 2-4 for the season.
International team-mate Mada Abdelhamid hauled in 23 boards to help Houghton College overwhelm Paul Smith’s College 76-48.
The powerful forward added 18 points as the Highlanders improved to 4-2 for the season.
In Germany, Tall Black point guard Mark Dickel provided stability down the stretch for Bundesliga champions Bamberg as they held off Gottingen 73-66.
The veteran Kiwi played the entire fourth quarter, contributing eight points (1/1 3pt, 6/6 FT), eight rebounds, three assists and no turnovers after Bamberg allowed most of a 25-point halftime lead slip away in the third quarter.
Bamberg now share their league-leading 9-2 record with Berlin and Artland.
In Iceland, coach Jeff Green’s Hottur side crashed 68-114 to FSu in the D1 second division competition. Kiwis Benny Hill (14 points) and Everard Bartlett (11) were held to 10/24 FG and 0/5 from the arc.
Hottur rounded out a double-header weekend with an 83-98 loss to Breidablik. Bartlett led his team with 25 points (9/17 FG, 2/6 3pt, 5/5 FT), while Hill had 15 points (4/8 FG, 2/6 3pt, 1/2 FT).
