Powered by 21 points from Kirk Rangiawha, the New Zealand boy’s team made a winning start at the Australia Under-16 National Championships in Kalamunda, West Australia, on Saturday.
Rangiawha shot 5-of-9 from long distance to top-score, while Jordan Ngatai produced a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the New Zealanders defeated South Australia Country 87-70 on the tournament’s opening day.
The Kiwis won every quarter, extending their led to 10 points by halftime, and forced SA Country into 29 turnovers as Magnus Holding added 13 points and four assists, and Alonzo Burton 10 points and nine rebounds.
It was not such a good start for the Kiwi girls, going down 82-43 to South Australia Metro on day one, getting 15 points and nine rebounds from Aleesha Coulter and eight rebounds and three assists from Moengaroa Subritzsky.
The NZ boys met West Australia Metro and the girls face Queensland South in round two on Sunday.
