The New Zealand men will play for seventh and the women for ninth on the final day of the Australia Under-18 National Championships in Ballarat, Victoria, on Saturday.
The Kiwi women defeated ACT 57-52 in their first knockout game, getting 15 points from Jasmine Davis and a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double from Natasha Hall, and will play Queensland North for ninth on the tournament’s final day.
NZ trailed by five points at halftime but hit the front with an 18-12 third period and extended the lead in the final 10 minutes, also getting eight points and six rebounds from Awhina Karawana and six points and seven rebounds from Mesha Blair.
The Kiwi men held a four-point halftime lead but scored only 23 points in the second half, out-played and out-scored 63-23, in a 90-54 loss to West Australia Country that now sees them meet Victoria Country for seventh.
Winston Li finished with 12 points and five rebounds, Ethan Rusbatch 12 points, Tom Rowe 11 points and four rebounds, James Holland 11 points, and Jake Ashby 10 rebounds and three assists.
