American point guard Ashley Awkward is a game-time decision for the Christchurch Sirens’ Friday road clash with the Australian Institute of Sport in the Australian Defence Force WNBL.

The import sustained an ankle injury in last week’s victory over Sydney Flames and if judged unfit, will be replaced by young playmaker Suzie Bates in the starting line-up.

Veteran point guard Noni Wharemate has been recovering from a prolapsed disc in her back and is scheduled to play on Friday, but will miss Sunday’s outing against Adelaide Lightning due to religious reasons.

There are positive signs on other injury fronts with Lisa Wallbutton back on court conducting light workouts after a stress fracture and Charmian Purcell, recovering from ACL surgery, participated fully in training for the first time on Tuesday night.

The Sirens will be in pursuit of their first road win this weekend after a run of four home wins. They moved up to ninth on the ladder with their result over Sydney and now have a 4-7 record.

The WNBL is being billed by league office as one of the tightest for some time with one win separating first from fifth, while the Sirens are only two wins out of the top four after starting the season with seven straight losses.
