Kim Barnes hit the game-winning basket as UC-Irvine ended a 13-game losing streak

Kim Barnes made sure her last two points were the most important.

Barnes, a Counties Manukau product, hit the game-winning turn-around basket in the post with 1.5 seconds remaining as UC-Irvine collected their first Big West conference win and ended a 13-game losing streak 48-46 over Cal State Northridge at home on Saturday.

The former Junior Tall Fern scored 10 of her season- and team-high 11 points in the second half, shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 1-of-4 from the foul-line, to go with four rebounds and two blocks in 28 minutes for the Anteaters, who improved to 4-15 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Double-digit games were the norm for Kiwi girls in the US college system last week.

Also in NCAA-D1, Harbour guard Kezia Kelly went point-less as Washington State fell to UCLA and USC in a Los Angeles double-header last week. Kelly got a combined seven minutes of game time in the two losses, which put the Cougars back to 8-10 on the year and 1-6 in the Pac-10.

Hailey Purcell, younger sister of Tall Ferns Charmian and Natalie Purcell, had two points (1/2 FG), a rebound and assist in 13 minutes for UT-Martin in a 55-49 home loss to Eastern Illinois on Saturday, the Skyhawks seventh straight defeat, leaving them 2-17 and 0-9 in the OVC.
