Former Junior Tall Black Corey Webster and his Lambuth University are headed for the NAIA national tournament after adding the TranSouth tournament title to their regular season success in US college basketball.

Webster, the TranSouth Freshman of the Year, was relatively subdued in the final – four points (2/9 FG) and two steals in 27 minutes – but helped the Eagles to a 29-3 record for the season with their 81-78 win over Trevecca.

Cantabrian Caleb Harrison is assistant coach of the Lambuth men’s team, while sister Melissa Harrison and fellow Cantab Donna Lavea will also head to the national tournament in Kansas City with the women’s team.

Kiwi point guard Amanda Harris and her College of the Siskiyous are bound for the California state championships after their 56-54 win over Sierra College.

Harris, who recorded a triple double in the team’s penultimate regular season outing, had 12 points (4/7 FG, 2/4 3pt, 2/2 FT), five assists, five steals and three rebounds in the thriller. The Siskiyous face Mt Sac in the Elite Eight.

Gisborne-born centre Aron Baynes was an honourable mention when the Pac-10 Conference announced its end-of-season awards this week.

Baynes, who is eligible to play for the Tall Blacks and the Australian Boomers, led Washington State University in rebounding (5.9) this season, while also averaging 10.6 points (58.8% FG).

Meanwhile, in Europe, Kiwi forward Brendon Polyblank compiled a “double double” as his Monthey club edged SAV Vacallo 65-64 in the Swiss Ligue Nationale de Basket.

Polyblank had 20 points (6/15 FG, 1/3 3pt, 7/8 FT) and 11 rebounds in 37 minutes as Monthey improved to 12-8 in fourth place on the league table.
