Former NZ Junior Tall Fern and Canterbury guard Mandy Caldwell has taken up a scholarship at Florida Southern College under former Otago womenís coach Jarrod Olson.
Caldwell (19) has represented New Zealand through the age groups, most recently the 2007 NZ U21 Junior Tall Ferns, and has consistently been a top performer at national age group championships. In 2006, she was selected to tournament teams at the U19 and secondary school nationals, and this year, the 2007 NZ U21 championships.
ìMandy is a tireless worker with a great attitude,î says Olson. ìSheís the type of player everyone wants on their team.
ìSheís a good shooter and defender with national team experience.î
Last year, the Moccasins had an 11-17 record with a roster that included Otago players Elise Cassidy and Katie Menzies, but neither have returned for 2007/08.
Another junior international – Counties Manukau centre Kim Barnes (1.93m) – is headed to University of California Irvine.
ìKim will bring much needed size to our line-up,î says Anteaters coach Molly Tuter. ìShe is deceivingly athletic, sees the floor very well for a post player and likes to get out and run.
ìShe hasnít been playing basketball for long, so her potential is tremendous.î
