Veteran Aussie Tony Ronaldson has led the Harvey Norman NZ Breakers to a 94-88 pre-season win – their second in as many days – over the South Dragons in Melbourne.
The Breakers followed up a one-point overtime win over the same opposition the night before with a more controlled performance in Game Two, streaking out to a 20-point halftime lead on the back of a dominant 32-12 second quarter.
Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis said his squad played smart basketball and strong foundations were being built for the teamís season opener against Cairns on the North Shore in a fortnight.
“For us right now itís all about building the base for our new packed defensive system,î Lemanis said. ìWhen we locked on it was as good a defensive effort as Iíve ever seen in my time with the club.î
The Breakers now head to Sydney to tackle the Sydney Kings on Saturday night. They play the Gold Coast Blaze on Monday and the champion Brisbane Bullets next Tuesday.
In other Breakers news, a scan has confirmed that new recruit Kirk Penney is unlikely to be fit for the Cairns Taipans match on September 20.
The Tall Black strained his calf a week ago and the prognosis is for 3-5 weeks on the sideline. Penney has now set his sights on being available for the clubís second game, against the West Sydney Razorbacks at home on October 4.
