Behind a 38-point second quarter and 23 points from American shooting guard Keith Salscheider, Devon Dynamos Taranaki powered to a 98-80 win over the Century City Wellington Saints in New Plymouth on Wednesday night.

Retired Tall Black Tony Rampton scored 21 points, Link Abrams added 19 and point guard Ben Jeffrey 16 as the Dynamos opened their season with a home win at TSB Stadium in round two of the Dominion Finance NBL.

A 38-26 second quarter turned a one-point quarter-time lead into a 13-point advantage at hafltime, with Salscheider, Rampton and Abrams all in double figures going into the main break.

The team formerly known as the Mountain Airs were able to hold the Saints at double-figures throughout the third and fourth quarters, and stretched it the margin in the closing minutes.

Rampton and Abrams each collected eight rebounds as Taranaki out-rebounded Wellington 52-34, while they out-shot the Saints in both field goal and three-point percentage. The Dynamos shot 50 percent from the field and 36.8 percent behind the perimeter, and the Saints 43.5 percent from the field and just 23.8 percent on threes, including 2-of-14 in the second half.

Saints American centre Nick Horvath scored a game-high 24 points, while former Tall Black Troy McLean bounced back from a disappointing opening weekend with 20 points, as Doug Marty’s club suffered their second loss in three games.

Devon Dynamos Taranaki 98 (Keith Salscheider 23, Tony Rampton 21, Link Abrams 19, Ben Jeffrey 16) Century City Wellington Saints 80 (Nick Horvath 24, Troy McLean 20, Marquis Webb 14, Luke Martin 13). 1Q: 20-19, HT: 58-45, 3Q: 74-62
