The CPS Nelson Giants almost let the win get away in regulation but did not make the same mistake in overtime.
American forward Michael Harrison hit the winning basket on a third-chance attempt with two seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Giants a 93-91 win over the Youthtown Auckland Stars on Saturday night.
Harrison finished with 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while fellow import Jamil Terrell posted a double-double with 12 points,12 rebounds and four assists as the Giants held on at the Trafalgar Centre in round five of the Dominion Finance NBL.
Back-up guard Josh Clark missed two free-throws for the Stars with the scores tied at 91-91 and 24 seconds to play in overtime, then Harrison and Tall Black Phill Jones missed shots before Harrison corralled an offensive rebound and made the winning shot.
Giants guard Chris Daniel added 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Jones had 16 points, four rebounds and six assists, and point guard Michael Fitchett seven points, six rebounds and six assists.
Two-time 2008 NBL player of the week Casey Frank scored a game-high 28 points, while American point guard Larry Bratcher had his best game in Stars blue with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Adrian Majstrovich added 19 points and seven rebounds, while Dillon Boucher pulled down 11 boards.
The Giants led by 12 points with 7:59 remaining in regulation but the Stars then out-scored the hosts 20-8, Bratcher tying the game with eight second remaining and Nelson unable to get a potential game-winning shot off.
In Christchurch, Devon Dynamos Taranaki completed the Southern double-header unbeaten with a 100-75 win over the Marley Canterbury Rams.
American Keith Salscheider shot 10-of-12 from the field, scoring a game-high 27 points, adding four rebounds and three assists as the Dynamos improved to 4-3 to join the Waikato Pistons, 89-82 winners over the Appliance Shed Harbour Heat earlier Saturday, Giants and Stars on eight points.
Link Abrams had 21 points and six rebounds, while Tony Rampton added 17 points and eight rebounds for Taranaki, who dominated the game from the outset, leading by 13 points after the first quarter and by 20 after three periods.
Point guard Jeremy Kench and American forward Wilder Auguste led the 1-4 Rams with 15 points, while American swingman Joey Harrell grabbed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
