Fastbreak Management directors Des Friedrich and Jeremy Bayliss are stepping down from the Hawks’ NBL franchise after seven years.
Friedrich, now domiciled in Australia as chief executive of Darwin Turf Club, described it as “a journey of heartache and hard work” culminating in the Hawks’ first championship in 2006.
In stepping down, he had special thanks for the Hawks’ supporters, especially loyal sponsors Hamish White (Furnware), Rod Earnshaw (0800 Easy LPG), Dennis Buckley (Shed) and Kevin Atkinson (IMS Payroll) for their “total support and trust”.
Jump Basketball has also been a key partner in the success of the Hawks and are now preparing a bid to retain the licence in Hawke’s Bay.
Chairperson Graham Todd said final budgets are being prepared and a final decision on entry had yet to be made. At this stage, they have not formally secured entry into the 2008 Dominion Finance NBL.
Todd hoped this would be a formality once appropriate funding was confirmed.
General manager Michael Barbour confirmed the key members of the Hawks squad that finished runners-up to Nelson this year had committed verbally, and would move to sign contracts once entry and a participation agreement was received from NBL Ltd.
