The Junior Tall Ferns have begun their competitive build-up for the Oceania U19 Championships in August with a series of games against Melbourne club teams.

The young Kiwis have notched up wins over U23 teams from Nunawading and Dandenong in their first two outings, with three more lined up this week.

In their 62-61 result over Nunawading on Monday, Josie Stockill of Hawke’s Bay provided the winning basket and New Zealand forced a crucial turnover to hold against their older opponents.

Otago forward Samara Gallaher led all scorers with 22 points.

The following night, Hutt Valley guard Bailey Ross-Waitai got hot from the arc, scoring 14 of her 19 points in the second half as the JTFs emerged 58-54 clear of Dandenong.

New Plymouth forward Terai Sadler dominated around the boards with 20 rebounds.

They were due to face Frankston U23 on Wednesday.

The touring Junior Tall Ferns squad is …
