The Junior Tall Ferns will help prepare Fiji for their daring Olympic bid with two games in Auckland in early April.

A 12-strong squad was named after last month’s All-NZ Camp in Palmerston North to prepare for the FIBA Oceania Championships later this year and will begin its preparation against the South Pacific champions on April 11/12.

Fiji are headed to Spain for the FIBA Olympic Qualfiying Tournament in June, but will camp in Auckland for a week, playing the Kiwi juniors, WBL champions North Harbour and Auckland.

The Junior Tall Ferns will be led by senior squad members Erin Rooney and Rebecca Dew.

“We are currently trying to arrange further international opportunities for our young women to help prepare them for the Oceania series,” says Basketball New Zealand player development manager Ollie Dudfield.

“Fiji were well beaten at last year’s Oceania championship in Dunedin, but will have benefited from the experience and will be more competitive this time against our up-and-coming athletes.”

The Junior Tall Fern squad to meet Fiji, April 11/12, is …

Kayla Cullen (Auckland), Rebecca Dew (Harbour), Mieke Elkington (Porirua), Samara Gallagher (Otago), Cody Hippolite (Porirua), Jordan Hunter (Counties Manukau), Zoe Kensington (New Plymouth) , Kate Lacey (Harbour), Hannah Mackay (Canterbury), Chevannah Paalvast (Waitakere City), Erin Rooney (Canterbury), Jelena Vucinic (Nelson)

Reserves: Meesha Blair (Waitakere City), Mikayla Blair (Harbour), Freda Riwai (Harbour)
