US-based players Dion Prewster and Ritchie Edwards will lead the Junior Tall Blacks to the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany next month.
A strong 12-man squad was named for the event after last week’s All-NZ Camp in Palmerston North … most were members of the roster that attended The Big Event in Las Vegas last year.
Prewster and Edwards have been identified as US college prospects, and are currently attending high schools in Iowa and Florida respectively.
The Schweitzer tournament, held every two years in Mannheim, will provide other Kiwis with a chance to impress college and pro scouts as they compete against the best U19 players in the world as part of their build-up towards this year’s FIBA Oceania Championships.
“These selections reflect the work athletes have done over the summer since receiving their programmes last October,” says Basketball New Zealand player development manager Ollie Dudfield.
“It is a big step up for them and represents a real commitment towards making basketball their careers.”
The Junior Tall Black squad to the Albert Schweitzer Tournament, March 22-30, is …
Duane Bailey (Waitakere City), David Beck (Wellington), Joshua Bloxham (Nelson), Poutu Edwards (Counties Manukau), Ritchie Edwards (Canterbury/US), Samuel King (Otago), Robert Loe (Harbour), Morgan Nathan (Otago), Dion Prewster (Wellington/USA), Brook Ruscoe (Wellington), Dennis Tawhiti (Counties Manukau), Logan Van Beek (Canterbury)
Reserves: Adam Dunstan (WBOP), Tia-Toa Frost (Palmerston North), James Holland (Canterbury), Adam Rainbird (Nelson), Te Puao Silver (Waikato)
