Former Tall Blacks coach Tab Baldwin’s U Mobitelco Cluj-Napoca team is locked 1-1 in their best-of-five semifinal series against CSU Atlassib Sibiu in the Romanian Basketball League playoffs.
Cluj-Napoca, who finished third in the regular season at 19-7, took game one on Saturday against second-ranked Sibiu on the road 68-64 but dropped game two on Sunday 86-80, after falling behind with a 34-19 third quarter.
Baldwin and his team return home for games three and four in the all-Transylvania series in Romania’s north-west.
Tall Black centre Craig Bradshaw did not log any minutes as his Efes Pilsen Spor Kubulu lost 79-73 in game one of their best-of-five quarterfinal playoff series to Karsiyaka in the Turkish Basketball League on Sunday.
Game two is scheduled for Wednesday.
Gemma Kerr won the battle of two Kiwis in the South East Australia Basketball League (SEABL) on Saturday, her Kilsyth Lady Cobras taking down former Tall Fern Julie Ofsoski’s Frankston Lady Blues 84-54 in round 10.
Kerr had four points (2/6 FG, 0/3 3pt), three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 24 minutes, while Ofsoski had 10 points (4/15 FG, 2/2 FT) and five rebounds. Earlier in the round, Ofsoski compiled 19 points (7/15 FG, 5/7 FT), 10 rebounds and an assist in 38 minutes in Frankston’s 74-63 win over the Southern Districts Spartans.
The Lady Cobras sit on the edge of the top-four at 7-5 while Frankston sit ninth at 2-10.
Shannon Proffit put up big numbers as her Maroochydore Clippers women’s team defeated the Rockhampton Cyclones 70-49 in round three of the Queensland Australia Basketball League (QABL).
Proffit had 13 points (4/11 FG, 1/1 3pt, 4/5 FT), 17 rebounds, two assists and five steals in 36 minutes and was among the outside contenders for player of the week honours.
Zeke Meehl had four points (1/5 FG, 0/1 3pt, 2/4 FT), five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes but the Maroochydore men’s side went down hard to the Rockhampton Rockets, 132-67.
The Lady Clippers improved to fourth, at 2-1, with the win, while the men dropped to 0-3 and 15th.
In the Western Australia State Basketball League (SBL), former Tall Fern Jess Spinner top-scored for her Wanneroo Wolves in two games in round six but could not prevent two losses. Spinner had eight points in a 80-52 loss to the Eastern Suns and 10 points in an 83-60 loss to the Willetton Tigers, dropping the Wolves to 2-5 and 10th.
