Emerging Tall Black Zane Meehl, Otago Nugget Shaun Tilby and former Junior Tall Fern Adrianne Gilbert narrowly missed triple-doubles in the latest rounds of Australia Basketball Association (ABA) leagues last week.

Meehl fell one rebound short of a triple-double, finishing with 23 points (8/11 FG, 3/4 3pt, 4/4 FT), nine rebounds, 10 assists and four steals in 37 minutes of a Mackay Meteors 115-89 win against younger brother Zeke’s Maroochydore Clippers in round 13 of the Queensland Australia Basketball League (QABL).

Meehl also had 18 points (7/23 FG, 4/11 3pt, 0/1 FT), seven rebounds and an assist and block in 48 minutes in Mackay’s 112-94 loss to the Logan Thunder and nine points (2/11 FG, 1/3 3pt, 4/6 FT), six rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of their 136-85 loss to the Brisbane Capitals, dropping to 10th at 6-9.

Team-mate and former Tall Black Miles Pearce produced 21 points (6/14 FG, 9/14 FT), 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 43 minutes against Logan, 25 points (11/20 FG, 1/1 3pt, 2/4 FT), 15 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 34 minutes against the Clippers and 12 points (5/11 FG, 2/5 FT), eight rebounds and three blocks in 36 minutes in losing to the Capitals.

Tilby compiled 11 points (4/12 FG, 1/2 3pt, 2/3 FT), seven rebounds, nine assists and three steals in 45 minutes in his Gold Coast Goannas 93-88 loss to the Capitals, and followed it with 10 points (5/14 FG, 0/3 3pt), seven rebounds, three assists and four steals in 34 minutes in a 108-80 win over the Clippers.

In the New South Wales women’s Waratah League, Gilbert produced 18 points (7/14 FG, 0/2 3pt, 4/5 FT), 12 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in 27 minutes for her Bankstown Bruins, who remained undefeated at 12-0 with a round remaining following a 104-46 win over the struggling Norths Bears.

Zeke Meehl had 16 points (4/7 FG, 1/2 3pt, 7/9 FT), six rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes for the winless Clips against the Meteors and four points (1/3 FG, 1/2 3pt, 1/2 FT), six rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes versus Gold Coast.

Tall Blacks triallist Callum Baynes and former Nelson Giant Rowan Gray helped the defending champion Cairns Marlins keep their QABL top-four hopes alive with their seventh straight win, a 102-83 win over the Townsville Heat.

Gray had five points (2/7 FG, 1/4 FT), five rebounds and a block in 21 minutes while Baynes went scoreless, with a rebound and steal in four minutes.

Switching to the QABL women’s league, Cantabrian Shannon Proffit produced two 40-minute performances as her Maroochydore Clippers split their double-header. She had 30 points (11/15 FG, 1/2 3pt, 7/7 FT), 15 rebounds, four assists, five steals and a block in a 75-70 win over the Mackay Meteorettes and 15 points (2/11 FG, 0/2 3pt, 11/12 FT), seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in the team’s 86-65 loss to the Gold Coast Gliders.

The loss put a dent in the Lady Clippers top-four chances, dropping back to sixth at 10-6.

Gemma Kerr put up six points (2/6 FG, 1/3 3pt, 1/4 FT), two rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes as her Kilsyth Cobras were upset 80-72 by the Knox Raiders but maintained their top-four place, for now, in round 19 of the South East Australia Basketball League (SEABL).

Former Tall Fern Julie Ofsoski recorded a double-double with 17 points (5/12 FG, 7/10 FT), 10 rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block in 34 minutes as the Frankston Lady Blues defeated the now 0-23 Albury Wodonga Lady Bandits 74-62 in the bottom-of-the-table clash.
