Tall Fern point guard Angela Marino helped Adelaide Lightning consolidate their grip on the top of the Australian Defence Force WNBL table with a pair of wins over the Australian Insitute of Sport and Townsville.
Marino had four points (1/5 FG, 2/2 FT), two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 19 minutes in the 89-69 defeat of AIS, then seven points (1/6 FG, 1/3 3pt, 4/4 FT), two rebounds, an assist and a steal in 24 minutes in the 86-79 result over Townsville.
In US college play, Counties Manukau forward Kim Barnes maintained her perfection from the charity stripe as UC Irvine defeated University of Nevada 77-74.
Barnes had four points (1/2 FG, 2/2 FT) and three rebounds in six minutes off the bench, and is now 22/22 FT for the season. The Anteaters improved to 5-4.
Canterbury centre Donna Lavea led Lambuth University with a 22 points/12 rebounds “double double” as they defeated Lindsey Wilson College at the Citizen’s Bank Classic, extending the Lady Eagles’ winning streak to five games.
The streak became six when they accounted for hosts Cambellsville 85-74 with Lavea scoring 11 points.
Rotorua centre Te Awhina Aranui was a force around the boards and on defence to help Cascade College defeat rivals Walla Walla 85-52 for the second time this season.
Aranui had six points (1/9 FG, 4/6 FT), 12 rebounds, seven steals and an assist as the Thunderbirds improved to 7-4.
Canterbury guard Mandy Caldwell had six points (3/7 FG), two rebounds, two assists and a steal in 24 minutes to help Florida Southern University defeat Flagler 79-55 and improve their record to 4-3 for the season.
