Kiwi centre Sean Marks made his first oncourt appearance of the NBA regular season as the Phoenix Suns trounced Charlotte Bobcats 115-83 on the road.
The Suns were on top of their rivals from the start and lead by 22 points at halftime, allowing their reserves plenty of time to show their skills in the game’s latter stages.
Marks logged 16 minutes for 13 points (5/7 FG, 3/5 FT) and three rebounds.
In college ranks, Canterbury centre Donna Lavea made an impressive debut for defending NAIA national champions Lambuth University as they fell 58-87 to Southern Illinois University in a pre-season outing.
Lavea, who transferred from Paris Community College over the US summer, had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks as a starter, while provincial team-mate Melissa Harrison contributed a three-pointer, three assists and a steal against the Division I Missouri Valley Conference champions.
Former Junior Tall Black Corey Webster logged 22 minutes off the bench for the Lambuth men in their 114-73 win over Carver Bible College. He had seven points (1/9 FG, 1/4 3pt, 4/4 FT), five assists, three rebounds and a steal in 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, former Westlake Boys High School team-mate Tom Abercrombie logged 15 minutes in Washington State UniversityĆs pre-season opener against Lewis-Clark State, an 80-42 win. Abercrombie had two points (1/3 FG), four rebounds and an assist.
Forward Jeremiah Trueman made his first appearance for the University of Alaska-Anchorage in their 80-69 road win over Cal State Bakersfield. Trueman transferred from San Diego Christian College over the summer, amassing six points (3/5 FG), four rebounds, an assist and a steal in 10 minutes on debut.
Tall Fern Micaela Cocks had three points (1/7 FG, 1/5 3pt), a rebound and an assist as University of Oregon needed overtime to beat Love & Basketball 73-69. They open their regular season against San Jose State on Saturday.
At Washington State University, Harbour guard Kezia Kelly had four points (2/7 FG) as the Huskies fell 64-70 to Alaska-Anchorage in overtime. WSU open their regular season against University of Portland on Friday.
