NBL Board Extends Deadline

The board of the National Basketball League (NBL) has extended the deadline for teams to enter the 2009 competition, in order to assist the three franchises which are yet to confirm their participation.
At this morning’s 9am deadline, payment had been received from seven of last year’s teams - Auckland Stars, Harbour Heat, Manawatu Jets, Nelson Giants, Taranaki Dynamos, Waikato Pistons and Wellington Saints, leaving three - Bay Hawks, Canterbury Rams and Otago Nuggets - still to confirm one way or another.
“We’re delighted that seven teams will definitely take part in the 2009 NBL, and are working closely with the other three to try to get them over the line,” NBL chairman Sam Rossiter-Stead explained.
“They each have their own individual circumstances, but share the common issue of a potential change of management and/or ownership for the 2009 season.
“Although we have pressing commercial timelines to meet, the board has extended the deadline for receipt of the initial $5,000 payment until 5pm on Friday December 5. That is the very latest we can leave things and hope it gives Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay and Otago time to confirm their respective entries.
“I have spoken to representatives of all three teams this morning and offered them whatever support we can in order to help secure their participation.”
