The 2010 Junior Tall Blacks head into the Albert Schweitzer Tournament still seeking their first win on European soil, but still learning valuable lessons about international basketball.
The U19 national men’s team rounded off their preparation with a 47-97 loss to France in Strasbourg, a step down from their 27-point defeat the previous night. They really fell away in the final quarter (34-10) when coach Deslea Wrathall gave her bench extended minutes.
“We made some basic mistakes and committed 30 turnovers,” rued Wrathall. “But I thought Max Williams played some great defence, as well as top-scoring, while Rueben Te Rangi was outstanding in allowing their seven-foot ‘big’ just two points.”
Captain Williams had 12 points to lead his team, while Te Rangi gathered 10 points and eight boards.
The young Kiwis will now accompany the French team from Strasbourg to Mannheim by bus and face Italy in their AST opener on Saturday.
