The OceanaGold Nuggets have confirmed the signing of American Tyler Amaya as their second import for the 2010 National Basketball League season.

Amaya (27) is a 2.00m (6ft 7in) forward from Bellingham, Washington, who has played professionally in the USA, China, Germany, and Holland. Amaya was invited to trial for the Houston Rockets last September.

Amaya, who will form a formidable import duo with fellow American Antoine Tisby this season, is currently playing for the Seattle Mountaineers in the ABA, where he is averaging over 26 points/seven rebounds and leads the team with 3.5 assists.

“I’m extremely excited and blessed for the opportunity to come to New Zealand,” he commented. “I’ve had many people tell me about their experiences in NZ and they have had nothing but the best to say.

“Coach Don Sims has told me alot about the league and Otago … it sounds like an amazing place to continue my career.”

OceanaGold Nuggets Coach Alf Arlidge is also very excited about the signing.

“Tyler is a great signing for the OceanaGold Nuggets. He brings lots of international experience, leadership, the ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter and also great rebounding and passing.

“Tyler will compliment Antoine Tisby and our other players, and will definitely help free Tisby up in the post. He will also add great athleticism to the team and will no doubt impress the fans with this aspect of his game.”

The OceanaGold Nuggets will play a series of pre-season games in Christchurch on February 19-20, with the first home game in Dunedin on Saturday, March 13.
