American Don Sims has been appointed head coach of the Otago Nuggets in the 2008 Dominion Finance NBL after an intensive recruitment and selection process that saw 24 applicants from all parts of the globe.

Basketball Otago chief executive Mark Rogers was confident with the process and the selection.

ìI am very pleased with how we have gone about the appointment and selection process,” he said. “The number of applicants itself made for a lot of work.

“The selection panel was unanimous in its decision to go with Don. After three rounds of interviews, many hours of reference checks, the use of objective rating scales and much debate, he emerged our number one contender.

“Weíre excited that we were able to recruit someone of his talent and skills. He is a proven campaigner.î

Sims has an impressive coaching record in the United States, Portugal, England, Canada and Columbia. He currently coaches the Seattle Mountaineers of the IBL, has twice been voted the Western Conference Coach of the Year (2006 & 2007) and was appointed head coach of the IBL Western All-Star Team in the IBL East-West game in 2006.

Simís Mountaineers team placed second in the 2006 IBL season with an impressive 15-5 winning record and third in 2007 in the Western Conference with an eight-game winning streak.

He will arrive in Dunedin in January and is under no illusions about the task ahead. In 2007, Otago finished bottom of the NBL for the third consecutive season with a 2-16 record.

ìIíve worked with teams in this position before,” says Sims. “Iím excited with what Iíve seen … itís time to walk the walk, as they say.

“The only way for us to move is up!î
