Tall Black and Burger King NZ Breaker Kirk Penney has been drafted by the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League and will play his basketball in South Dakota for the next few weeks at least.

Sioux Falls is a small city of 150,000 and the basketball team is a feeder for NBA sides Minnesota and Miami, both of which have a history with Kirk from his earlier forays into American basketball post his college playing days.

Kirk had one of his 10-day contracts with the Miami Heat and Minnesota was the team initially preparing to draft Penney before having him join them in a vets camp after the draft.

Penney won’t lack for familiar faces either in the league that offers young hopefuls and veterans alike the chance to impress NBA scouts and coaches. David Bailey (Perth), Justin Bowen (Gold Coast) and Jared Newson (Cairns) all out of the ANBL and on the Skyforce roster.

The links go further for Penney, a former University of Wisconsin graduate with players Greg Sitemsma, Joe Krabbenhoft and Assistant Coach Tanner Bronson all former Badgers.

Sioux Falls sits second on the Eastern Conference standings, 7.5 games back from Iowa and in contention for the play offs.
