Basketball New Zealand and the Road Safety Trust have joined the same huddle to make for safer roads.
A two-year deal will see the two organisations work together to promote safer driving practices and educating drivers on common distractions that can lead to crashes.
The campaign – “Keep Your Eyes On The Action” – will illustrate how distractions like sending or receiving text messages, dealing with children in the back seat, looking at street map or sign and adjusting the radio can result in a split-second concentration lapse and an accident.
“Same thing in basketball, if you’re not concentrating, a ball can go by you, a player can get round you, or a scoring opportunity is missed,” Basketball New Zealand CEO Dale Stephens said.
“Basketball New Zealand is delighted to be associated with the Road Safety Trust to help reduce the numbers of accidents caused by distraction.
“All our referees will be carrying the message “Keep your eyes on the action”. It’s what they do during the game. It’s what we all need to do when we’re behind the wheel.”
The slogan will be placed in advertising around the courts and the back of referees’ uniforms at all Basketball New Zealand games and tournaments in 2008 and 2009, with the Road Safety Trust having a right of renewal for subsequent years.
