Taumuranui College’s chances of defending their boys’ title all but disappeared as the Furnware NZ “A” Secondary Schools Championships began at North Harbour.

The champions’ hopes suffered a double blow when they fell to 51-65 to Dunstan HS in their tournament opener and were then edged 72-70 by Nga Taiatea Wharekura in the afternoon.

They now face a must-win game against Stratford HS on Day Two and then a likely crossover with the top qualifier of Pool A, either Paeroa College or Rotorua Lakes HS.

In the girls’ draw, 2008 runners-up Rotorua Lakes ended the day with two wins over Paeroa College (58-34) and Mairehau HS (88-14), while champions Church College also accounted for Paeroa 60-45.
