New Zealand U20 women fell to 1-3 with a 46-63 loss to Queensland on Day Four of their Australian state championships in Gawler, South Australia.
The Kiwis were quickly on the back foot, conceding a 13-1 run in the opening quarter and trailing 20-36 by halftime.
But they hung tough in the second half, pressuring their opponents into more turnovers (20-16) – nine in the third quarter alone – and holding their own around the boards.
The NZ women created as many chances as Queensland to score, but again struggled to capitalize, shooting just 26% FG.
Nelson guard Jelena Vucinic continued to lead her team in scoring with 13 points (5/15 FG, 1/5 3pt, 2/5 FT), four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. New Plymouth guard Bella McCallum had 10 points, while Otago forward Samara Gallaher gathered seven rebounds, four at the offensive end.
New Zealand face Victoria (3-1) on Day Five, while the men (0-3) return from a rest day to take on New South Wales (3-0) in their quarterfinals.
