The fledgling Christchurch Sirens franchise will host the first match of the Australian Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) tipping off in three months.
The Sirens will play the Townsville Fire on October 5 at the Westpac Centre in Christchurch, the first of 24 matches they will play in an expanded regular season that stretches to late February.
Their schedule then sees them play six games in Australia in the space of 15 days, underlining the intense nature of the competition.
The last match is away to Perth on February 17, with the top four out of 10 teams qualifying for the playoffs.
With the Sirens and Bendigo Spirit both new teams in the competition, the number of games teams play has expanded from 21 to 24.
The Sirens will play six double-head weekends but, curiously, face a long period without a game over the Christmas period, a break that lasts 22 days.
Thirteen of the Sirens’ matches are Friday night affairs and they are one of eight teams to play a Wednesday fixture, on December 19 at home to Adelaide.
All 12 of their home games are scheduled for the Westpac Centre, including the opener against a Fire side who finished sixth out of eight teams last year.
The first round will also feature a replay of last year’s grand final, with back-to-back premiers the Canberra Capitals hosting the Sydney Uni Flames later on Friday night.
