0800 Easy LPG Bay Hawks have signed American forward Kevin Smith as one of their two overseas imports for the 2008 Dominion Finance NBL season.

Smith played for the Waikato Pistons in last year’s NBL, averaging 18.5 points and 6.8 rebounds, and was listed as the seventh most productive player in the league.

“Kevin has been playing semi- professional basketball in Texas lately but is now back home in Alabama,” said 0800 Easy LPG Hawks general manager Michael Barbour.

“Because he has a Kiwi partner, we had heard that he was looking to come back to New Zealand and, as soon as we did, we registered our interest. Despite playing well for Waikato last year, he had no intention of returning and we’re delighted to have snapped him up.

“[Hawks coach] Shawn Dennis was very impressed with him last year and with the possibility that he may become a New Zealand-registered player in the future, Kevin is a good signing for us.”

Hawks season tickets are on sale at Pettigrew-Green Arena, before the home opener against the Harbour Heat on March 13.
