North Harbour’s Alex Stojkovic has been appointed to coach the NZ men’s team at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, August 14-26.

The YOG U18 basketball competition will be contested in the FIBA33 format, an updated version of the traditional “three-on-three” game. New Zealand is one of 20 teams in the men’s draw, and Basketball New Zealand has secured Olympic Solidarity Funding to help select and prepare a team of four players born between January 1, 1993, and December 31, 1994.

“It is a tremendous honour to coach the New Zealand men at the first ever Youth Olympic Games,” says Stojkovic, who has just taken up a post as Harbour Basketball development officer.

“I am humbled by this opportunity and the faith that Basketball New Zealand has in me to lead this campaign.

“FIBA33 is a brand new concept, which will provide fast action for everyone to enjoy. Most countries have little experience with this style of play, which means that there is an even playing field for all teams involved.”

Stojkovic, who has coaching experience at NBL, CBL, age group representative and secondary school levels, hopes to provide a programme that will promote the new brand around New Zealand.

“My goal is to prepare a team that will not only be very competitive at the tournament, but will also follow the spirit of the Olympics and make New Zealand proud.

“This experience is more than just about the game of basketball. It is about involving and inspiring the youth of New Zealand through the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.”

Stojkovic proposes a series of regional FIBA33 tournaments around the country, with players from each being invited to a national trial and preparation camps.
