The Wollongong IMB Hawks have announced they have secured highly sought-after New Zealand guard Lindsay Tait to a three-year deal.
A current standout in the New Zealand NBL (NZNBL), Tait is the final piece to what looks to be a very strong guard rotation for the IMB Hawks this upcoming season.
The 25-year old has been dominating the NZNBL this season playing for the Auckland Stars alongside former IMB Hawk Casey Frank. Tait has averaged 35 points, eight assists and 2.7 steals per game the last three weeks to claim three straight Player of the Week honours.
ìIím happy to welcome Lindsay to the Club,” Wollongong IMB Hawks coach Eric Cooks said. “He has been one of our key targets this off-season. He will be a major contributor this season and into the future.î
ìTait is the final piece to what I see being a very strong guard rotation for the IMB Hawks this season. He has the ability to play point guard or shooting guard positions, can knock down the open shot, heís quick to the basket and brings a high level of maturity at such a young age.î
The New Zealand international played three seasons with the New Zealand Breakers from 2003-2006. After injuring his wrist in early 2006 during the NZNBL season, Tait decided to hone his skills in Europe, accepting an offer to play in Switzerland.
He is now back and ready to show that he has what it takes to be a premier guard in the Philips Championship.
ìIím excited about coming to Wollongong and playing at a high level, itís great to be back in the NBL,î Tait said.
ìI had a rough year in 2006 with the injury, but Iíve worked hard and Iím ready to prove what I can do and that I can play at a high level.î
Tait an accomplished player at 25 in the NZNBL, has dominated the competition over the past four seasons, being named in the All-Star top five each year, winning championships in 2004 and 2005 and being named the league MVP in 2005.
ìThe opportunity to play for one of the NBL foundation teams is great,î Tait said. “Iíve heard so much about the fans and their support of the club and Iím looking forward to playing at the Sandpit. Coach Cooks has this team moving in a positive direction and I wanted to be a part of that.”
The return of Mat Campbell, Ben Castle and John Philip and new additions Jeremy Kench, Larry Davidson, Cameron Tragardh and import Kavossy Franklin have added to the busy off-season signings for the IMB Hawks. With Tait agreeing to a three-year deal, the IMB Hawks have two spots remaining to complete the 2007/08 IMB Hawks roster.
