National league stalwart Colin Tilley has largely been a behind-the-scenes man … until now.

Tilley, a constant presence at NBL games through his duties as league statistician, will take a more up-front role after being appointed to the newly-created role of judicial commissioner.

His responsibilities include handling and overseeing any judicial matters surrounding the Dominion Finance NBL and working closely with the franchises and Basketball New Zealand with regards to best practices.

“It’s a focused responsibility concentrating primarily on the smooth day-to-day running of the league,” says Tilley (49), who resides in Auckland.

“From a judicial perspective, I don’t see it as fighting fires, but more appropriately making sure there are no fires to fight.”

“The league needs consistency in its leadership and its direction. It’s the sport’s showpiece and, while we’ve got the Breakers, the NBL is still the face of New Zealand basketball and we’ve got to provide a product that our up-and-coming basketballers can and want to aspire to.  How many Victor Vitos are there in basketball?”

Tilley’s basketball involvement has included running New Plymouth basketball at club, association levels, involvement with franchise teams and as commissioner for the Conference Basketball League (second division) and Women’s National Basketball League for four years.

Tilley, who brings with him 32 years of experience in the marketing and advertising world, is also the New Zealand representative for Cybersports, the company that produces the statistics software used by Basketball New Zealand.
