With three players named to the tournament team, the Otago girl’s team were the toast of Dunedin after claiming the Oreo Under-17 National Basketball Championships title in the Southern city on Monday.

Samara Gallaher was named tournament MVP after Otago’s 69-64 win over Auckland in a thrilling final, while team-mates Caroline Crowley and Renee Johnson were included in the 10-deep tournament squad. Hutt Valley defeated Canterbury 61-50 in the third-fourth playoff.

North Harbour Maroon, paced by MVP Brad Anderson and tournament teamers Anthony Jones and Sonny Tuaputa, defeated Wellington 81-68 in the boy’s final, while Nelson rolled Palmerston North 90-71 for third.
