Three stand out as WBC begins

Hosts Nelson Sparks, Hutt Valley Flyers and Canterbury Wildcats have emerged from Day One of Women’s Basketball Championship play with two wins apiece and an early march on their rivals.
The Sparks, who finished runners-up last year, were big winners over Palmerston North (84-45) and Taranaki Trojans (71-39).
Canterbury eased past debutants Rotorua Lady Vols (63-51) and Waitakere West Auckland Rangers (62-54).
But Hutt Valley may have scored the most significant victory of the day, when they accounted for former champions Harbour Breeze 60-47 in the late round.
