National Basketball League referee Gavin Whiu has been nominated as a finalist for Referee/Umpire of the Year at next week’s Tainui Waka Sports Awards.

Whiu, who has whistled more than 180 games in the NBL since his debut in 1994, officiated in his seventh straight NBL Finals in June and toured with the New Zealand Tall Blacks to Canada and Slovenia in July.

He will contest the Referee/Umpire of the Year award with netball’s Tania Scott and softball’s Wiremu Tamaki at the annual Tainui awards dinner at Tainui Endowed College at Hopuhopu on Friday, November 14.

“The awards are designed to recognise outstanding sporting achievements of our people of Hauraki, Maniapoto, Raukawa and Waikato,” said Tainui Sports Ltd. director Sonny Wilson.

Former league international Tawera Nikau, former netballer Jenny-May Coffin, former sevens star Dallas Seymour and national title-winning netball coach Nicole Dryden will judge the 2008 edition of the awards.
