Christchurch Sirens forward Donna Wilkins has been named the Australian Defence Force Womenís National Basketball League (WNBL) Nivea Player of the Week for Round Five.
The dual New Zealand international was instrumental in leading the Sirens to their first ever WNBL league win, tallying a faultless 15 point, 17 rebound, 4 assist and 2 steal performance in 37 minutes on court in a 77-56 victory of the Dandenong Rangers at Cowles Stadium in New Zealand.
The former Canberra Capital championship-winning forward was defensively outstanding, restricting key Rangers forwards Shelly Hammonds and Opal Michele Brogan to a collective total of four points for the match.
ìWe were very excited with getting the win against Dandenong,î Wilkins said. ìObviously, for us, it was a long time coming, but itís pretty tough playing in this league and we had been travelling for sometime, so everyone was stoked to get that win.î
ìI am playing this season to offer a bit of experience to the team. The Sirens team is a young, up-and-coming team, and I am playing to add as much experience as I can and help the younger ones, so I was pretty pleased with my performance in the game.
ìWe knew if we could keep them [Hammonds and Brogan] restricted that we were in with a show and that is what we did.”
Wilkins has been a pillar of strength for the Sirens in their debut WNBL season, averaging a consistent 12.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while her work on the defensive end has been dominant.
ìWe have three home games in a row now, but it is one game at a time for us. Playing at Cowles Stadium will give us a bonus,î Wilkins said.
