Workshop Goes Biennial

Basketball New Zealand’s annual Coaches Workshop will now be biennial.
The annual coaching get-together, held over Labour Weekend, will now switch to every second year, starting in July 2009, then from 2011, likely moving back to its traditional slot.
“That’s to try to tie it in with Sparc and to encourage more involvement with the Sparc coaching development conference, which happens every two years, in alternating years from our workshop,” said Bill Eldred, BBNZ’s coach development officer.
“Having it biennially will allow us to have more preparation time and we’ll be able to focus funding on a more extensive event for the coaches.”
Next year’s workshop has been moved up in the year to take advantage of the international coaches that will be in New Zealand for the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship For Men in Auckland, from July 2-22.
The Coaches Workshop began in 2001 and has provided the country’s up-and-coming coaches with tutelage from New Zealand and Australia’s best coaches and players. For the first six years, the workshop was held in Wellington, before moving to Auckland last year.
DVDs from the 2007 Labour Weekend Coaches Workshop are available for order on the BBNZ website.
