Penney winning in Turkey
Tall Blacks shooter Kirk Penney has gotten off to a winning start in the Turkish Basketball League with his new club, TED Kolejliler.
The Ankara-based outfit defeated Tofa 81-72, leading most of the way and withstanding a rally towards the end.
Penney led 15 points (5/11 FG, 1/5 3pt, 4/5 FT), five rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes, while team-mate Nedim Yucel contributed a double double of 14 points/11 rebounds.
It’s not the first time this season Penney has rained on Tofa – he had 21 points in a 75-59 victory in Turkish Cup play last week.
In Australia, Tall Ferns coach Kennedy Kereama guided West Coast Waves to their first win of the WNBL season, with Kiwi guard Toni Edmondson playing a huge part in that victory.
The Waves overcame Sydney University Flames 78-70 at home, with Edmondson coming off the bench for 14 points (5/10 FG, 4/4 FT) and six rebounds in 27 minutes.
International team-mate Lisa Wallbutton had six points and six rebounds.
It was a good weekend for Tall Ferns in the Aussie league – guard Micaela Cocks had 14 points (2/2 3pt) in Townsville Fire’s 78-66 win over Canberra Capitals.
Point guard Angela Marino chipped in 12 points and six assists as Adelaide Lightning thumped Sydney University 86-60, while Ferns captain Natalie Taylor had 18 points and five rebounds in Logan Thunder’s 68-60 win over Canberra.
Meanwhile, former Tall Blacks coach Tab Baldwin and current NZ coach Nenad Vucinic have signed United States international point guard Justin Dentmon to their Fujian Quanzhou Bank team in the Chinese Basketball Association.
Dentmon (27) was a member of the American team that finished third at the Pan American Games in Mexico last year and also led the Austin Toros to the NBDL title, averaging 22.2 points and 5.3 assists. He has NBA experience with the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Hornets.
