Cocks plots playoff upset

Tall Ferns guard Micaela Cocks hopes to guide her Sandringham Sabres into the SEABL East Conference finals, when they take on Bendigo Braves in this weekend’s semis.
The Sabres qualified for the South East Australia Basketball League playoffs in fourth spot with a 12-14 record and a loss to the third-placed Braves would see them eliminated from the playoffs. Victory would earn them an opportunity against the loser between Dandenong and Geelong for a berth in the title game.
Cocks missed six games during the Ferns’ Olympic qualifying campaign, but finished the regular season as Sandringham’s leading scorer, averaging 18.3 points and shooting 75/92 (81.5%) from the free-throw line.
She also led her side with 18 points (4/6 3pt) when they toppled their rivals 60-53 on their home court two weeks ago.
But the Braves aren’t worried about that.
“They shot well that game, I’m not sure they can shoot as well as what they did,” Bendigo’s Mia Newley says.
“Micaela’s a great scorer and she controls the ball really well. If we can limit her points-scoring and make some others step up, then I think we’ll be in a good position.”
