Three into two don’t go – as Cashmere HS girls found to their horror at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in Nelson.
See updated draw and results here.
When quarterfinal spots were handed out at the end of Day Three, Cashmere, New Plymouth GHS and Westlake GHS all wound up with identical 4-1 records in Girls’ “AA” Group One.
The Christchurch school had dragged themselves into the three-way tie on Wednesday afternoon after their superb upset 75-72 win over Westlake, who had beaten top-seeded New Plymouth 74-65 the night before.
But Cashmere wound up on the wrong end of the countback, courtesy of their 13-point loss to the team from Taranaki on Day One.
While most pools went roughly to form – top seeds Westlake BHS, champions Rosmini College and Hutt Valley BHS barely survived late scares to emerge unbeaten among the boys, while Hamilton GHS, Fraser HS and Rangitoto College matched among the girls – not everything went according to plan.
As the late results came through, Boys’ “AA” Group Three was still heading for a possible three-way 3-2 tie for the quarterfinal spots.
There was still a little more heartache to come from the cut-throat nature of tournament pool play. As it was, Nayland College and Tauranga Boys won their final games to keep their title hopes alive.
Perhaps the most mouth-watering QF match-up on Day Four will see Rosmini face Auckland Grammar in a replay of last year’s boys final.
