Rosmini Colllege will be the only titleholders back to defend their crown when the NZ Secondary Schools Championships tip off in Nelson on Monday.
See updated draw and results here.
The North Shore school, with no prior credentials at this tournament, was a surprise winner of last year’s “AA” boys honours, beating past winners Auckland Grammar in the final. They’ll return without MVP Ana Haku, but still with Junior Tall Blacks Matt Lacey and Derone Raukawa on their roster.
They have qualified as second seeds this year, after Westlake Boys High School took out the northern premiership. Tall Black guard Tai Webster will lead their charge, but both Westlake and Rosmini start the tournament without key players – Raukawa, Jay Gerrand and Alex Talma (both WBS) are members of the NZ 3X3 team contesting the world youth championships in Spain.
They are expected to join their school teams on Wednesday.
Rosmini begin their campaign against Otumoetai College and Palmerston North Boys’ High School on Day One, while Westlake face Onehunga High and Massey High.
None of the other defending champions will attend the tournament this year. Hutt Valley High School girls failed to qualify for the “AA” draw, handing the top seeding to New Plymouth Girls’ High.
In the “A” competitions, neither Ngaruawahia High School (boys) nor Opunake High School (girls) competed at their premierships.
