Ronaldinho emerges as potential investor in Monaco amid takeover drama
Ronaldinho linked to Monaco takeover
Brazilian legend Ronaldinho has reportedly put himself forward as a possible investor in AS Monaco’s basketball operation. According to reports, he is part of a proposal that includes Andorran investment fund Clayton Sport and a letter of intent was reportedly sent to club executive Oleksiy Yefimov.
Until now, much of the club’s recovery plan has centered on a takeover led by former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn and his Helen Holdings group. Ronaldinho’s appearance adds a fresh wrinkle to that process and gives Monaco another option to consider as it searches for stable backing.
Club racing the clock to secure its future
Monaco is under heavy pressure to sort out its ownership and finances after the French federation’s appeals chamber confirmed the club would not be registered for the upcoming top‑flight season. The club has appealed that decision and plans to pursue conciliation with the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, with a tight deadline to lodge its case.
Negotiations with Mashburn’s group have continued in parallel while Ronaldinho’s proposal reportedly remains on the table. The key issue for the club is proving it has a credible ownership and financing plan that can satisfy the authorities—fast. If the Mashburn deal can’t deliver the guarantees required, an alternative such as the new proposal could be explored, but time is limited.
For now, Monaco must balance legal avenues, urgent talks with potential investors and preparations for both the worst and best-case scenarios. Whether the solution ultimately comes from Mashburn, Ronaldinho and Clayton Sport, or another suitor, the club’s short-term future is still very much up in the air.
