Isaiah Hartenstein explains Germany return after eight years: I want to give something back

Why he chose to come back now

Isaiah Hartenstein is rejoining the German national team after more than eight years away. The 28-year-old center says the timing finally felt right: early in his career he was focused on securing his place in the NBA, and coaches and teams often urged him to stay and train rather than play for the national side.

In addition to those early priorities, injuries and lengthy rehab summers kept him out of past squads. Now that he feels established in the NBA and has a clear role, he’s ready to give back to German basketball and help younger players coming through.

How he fits in and what’s ahead

Hartenstein doesn’t expect his return to upset the team’s balance. Having moved around the NBA, he says he knows how to adapt and to play in ways that make life easier for teammates. With the current roster largely intact from their recent success, he believes integration will be straightforward.

Looking ahead, he wants to be part of building toward the next major tournaments. This national-team window is an opportunity to develop chemistry and spend time with the group — something that’s hard to do during the packed NBA season. He’s also motivated by the idea of leaving something meaningful for the future of German basketball, hoping the sport grows when the next generation, including his future kids, comes through.
